Details:
In Asper Nation (New Star Books, 2007), journalist and academic Marc Edge profiles "Canada's most dangerous media company." The CanWest Global empire built by Izzy Asper and his family from their base in Winnipeg is dangerous, in Edge's view, because of the degree of media concentration involved, their open declaration of ideological perspectives, a willingness to dictate editorial policy, and a reputation for bottom-line management. While not entirely balanced in his treatment of either CanWest or the Aspers, Edge does an excellent job of situating his analysis in the context of Canadian regulatory structures, and the current newspaper and broadcasting environments. I'm going to use this as a text in MEDI 302 (Making the News). Comments?
